It’s going on 31/2 years since I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and I’m happy to say I’m doing well. I have learnt so much in that time, how to help myself to navigate some of the uncomfortable side effects of living with Cancer.
Today I would like to share some of the remedies I have used on my journey Bone pain after bone treatments A side effect of the cancer treatments for breast cancer can be reduced bone density and most patients, like myself, will need a bone treatment every 3-6 months to strengthen the bones. This treatment itself can leave you feeling a lot of bone pain and exhaustion. I have since found out this is partly due to the release of specific bone histamines. A very simple solution is to take the medication Clarityn. Take as prescribed for 1 week leading up to the treatment, I have found this drastically reduces the recovery time. Nausea and digestive discomfort As you can imagine, the cancer meds can seriously upset your digestive tract. A simple solution I’ve found is taking slippery elm and marshmallow to soothe the digestion and rebalance the gut bacteria, whilst protecting the digestion. Hot flushes The treatments force you into the menopause at a million miles an hour. Everything is experienced at a more intense level than a normal menopause. A few things I do are: - Hydrate – drink a minimum of 2L water per day - Cooling herbs – peppermint/spearmint/chamomile/yarrow tea are my favourites - Reduce alcohol, caffein and sugar consumption (this should be a must in any cancer) - Increase leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables These are just a few of the natural remedies I have found have helped me and I hope they might help you too to navigate your disease and treatment. What has this to do with herbal medicine I hear you ask. Across cultures and continents, a range of plants and herbs have become intertwined with the significance of the holiday season, offering both symbolic and medicinal purposes. Symbolism and Aromatherapy: Herbs and plants play an integral role in Christmas decorations, you can’t escape the aromas and the greenery over the holidays. Trees such as pine, cedar, and fir are prominently used as Christmas trees. These aromatic tree varieties not only represent eternal life but also bring the invigorating scent of the outdoors into our homes. Holly and mistletoe, often used as decorative elements during the holiday season, hold important symbolism as well. Ancient civilizations believed these plants possessed magical properties, including warding off evil spirits and ensuring fertility and prosperity. Medicinal Plants and Herbs: Echinacea, known for its immune-boosting properties, is commonly brewed into teas or taken as a supplement to help combat colds and flu. Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger all have warming and anti-inflammatory benefits, can alleviate digestive issues and soothe nausea – a common side effect of overindulgence during holiday feasts. Peppermint contains menthol, which acts as a decongestant and can relieve headaches. This herb is often brewed into teas or used as an essential oil to promote relaxation and reduce stress – a perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle. Culinary Uses: Rosemary, thyme, sage, and cinnamon are often part of our Christmas dishes. They not only enhance the flavours but also provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and digestive benefits. There is a reason that these herbs have become part of our traditions. Beyond their symbolic role, these herbs and plants bring healing properties, helping your physical and emotional well-being. This article will delve into the significance of nutrition and herbal remedies in combating winter colds, offering effective and holistic approaches to staying healthy during the chilly months.
Nutrition for Immunity: A well-balanced diet is crucial in supporting our immune system and protecting it against common cold viruses. Including immune-boosting foods in our meals is essential for providing the necessary vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to fight off infections. Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits are rich in vitamin C, known for its ability to strengthen the immune response. Other vitamin C-rich options include bell peppers, kiwi, and berries. Foods high in zinc, such as nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains, can aid in reducing the severity and duration of cold symptoms. Hydration is key, it helps to flush out toxins and keep the respiratory system functioning optimally. Drinking plenty of water, herbal teas, and warm broths can provide much-needed moisture and relieve cold-related congestion. Herbal Remedies for Relief: Herbal remedies can provide natural relief for symptoms associated with winter colds. In use for centuries and often a gentle, yet effective, approach to supporting the body's healing process. Echinacea has been traditionally used to strengthen immune function and reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms. Taken as tea/tincture/supplement. Elderberry, commonly found as syrup/capsules/teas, is hailed for its antiviral properties and its ability to strengthen the immune system. According to research, it may help reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms. Ginger, known for its warming effect, has long been used to alleviate coughs, congestion, and sore throats associated with colds. Its anti-inflammatory properties also help soothe irritated airways. Taken as tea, in food, as capsule/supplement. Conclusion: While winter colds may be inevitable, taking a proactive and holistic approach can help reduce their impact and duration. Prioritizing a balanced diet rich in immune-boosting nutrients and incorporating herbal remedies can enhance our body's innate ability to combat viruses and maintain optimal health. However, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any supplementation or herbal remedy to ensure compatibility with your individual health needs. By nurturing our bodies with nutrition and harnessing the power of nature's healing properties, we can navigate through the winter season with strength and vitality.
