Since starting my cancer treatments I have been firmly pushed me into the menopause, with hot lushes galore. I can normally cope with most things thrown at me, and in large i am coping with my cancer and learning what i can do to help myself. The flushes have been causing an awful neuralgia (nerve pain) in my face with each flush. I have started to drink a lovely menopause tea blend i make to help reduce the symptoms My hot stuff tea contains: - sage - this herb is one that most Women will think of for hot flushes. Sage has long been used for menopausal hot flushes - Nettle - not a well known use of nettle, but it is useful for reducing hot flushes, also they help reduce adrenal stress and help with sleep and helps strengthen bones - Melissa - can be used for nerve stimulation and sleep issues associated with menopause - Peppermint - adds a pleasant flavour, relieves heat from the body, aids sleep. The thing i love about herbal medicines is that many of them have a number of uses e.g. Sage is a digestive, a menopause herb, a herb to aid stress. Peppermint is a cooling tea, it is also a digestive, opens the airways, a brain booster. Melissa is one of my favourite digestive herbs, a herb to help with stress and anxiety. Nettle is more thought of as a herb for the urinary system, often used for gout, kidney function, fluid retention, but it is also high in iron, aids sleep and hot flushes. This is what i love about what i do, it’s a real skill to find the right combination of herbs for the person and the condition and as you might have noticed by now, I love a challenge. Angela Odoms-Young Phd., a professor of kinesiology and nutrition at the University of Illinois College of Applied Health Sciences, looks at how food can be a powerful tool in the times we find ourselves in. “A healthy diet helps support your immune system and reduces inflammation. That’s critical because inflammation and immune function play an important role in chronic conditions and infectious diseases like Covid-19.” There are some simple things you can add into your routine over the winter to help your immune system: 1- eat a rainbow- add in lots of vegetables to soups, stews, curries, bolognaise, even pizzas. Add more fruit in the diet as snacks, in your breakfast (berries with your porridge/muesli) 2- juice - 1 a day, vary the colour of the fruit and vegetables, add lemon/lime and always ginger in the winter 3- add some spice - add in some great herbs and spices to your food. As a herbalist my top picks are - ginger, turmeric, rosemary, thyme, black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon. Herbs and spices aren’t just for flavour but are used worldwide for their medicinal properties. 4- get a gadget- whether it’s a soup maker/air-fryer/nutribullet/juicer/slow cooker.
