As we start to come out of lockdown there will be a lot of people who are going to be thinking about weight management, if some of the posts I’ve seen are anything to go by.
 
There is so much info out there about top diet tips, loose a stone in a week, celebrity endorsed diets, new plan of the year.  Some say eat more protein, others say less fat, some say more fat, eat at certain times, don’t eat for extended periods, only eat green foods on Mondays.  I’ve seen lots of crazy ideas out there.  So what do I suggest?
 
Well I look at each client individually, we are all unique, with different likes and hates, different needs, different lifestyles, health issues, family history.  I have found over the years that one size fits all doesn’t work. But there are some general truths that hold true for any healthy weight management program:
 
🍏 eat mainly fresh produce and less products
🍏 colour is key – fruits and veg
🍏 keep it simple - look at the way we ate 30 years ago and before
🍏 fads don’t fix it
🍏 eat food that has had minimal changes
🍏 the less chemicals involved the better
🍏 if you have to read too many food labels it’s not fresh.
🍏 if you keep struggling to get it right get advice from someone who can make it easier and simpler
🍏 believe you can and you can
🍏 Balance is key – no extremes
🍏 Make tasty food, fresh

Lessons from a Pandemic

Well one thing we have learnt is that drinking or injecting disinfectant or bleach into ourselves is not the answer to killing a virus, sorry Mr Trump!

But seriously, there are some lessons we need to acknowledge for us to bring them forward and reduce the severity of the long term damage form this virus and others like it..

This pandemic has highlighted a number of issues we can change simply to improve overall health of the population and strengthen our immunity.

We need to start by looking at why:

- We are in an era where statistically our children will have worse health than their parents for the first time. 

- We have increasing numbers of chronic health issues

- We have an increasing population on longterm medications from younger ages.

- We have increasing numbers of health issues directly linked to poor nutrition in countries with an abundance of food

- We don't teach our children cooking and nutrition

- Our health model is not focussed on sustaining good health, but on disease control.

- We are not that healthy in general and there is so much we can do to rebalance that.

Previous pandemics often happened at times of poor hygiene, food shortage and population poverty.  This time that was not the case, so what's the link?

Low immunity
There are a number of things that can have an adverse effect on our immune systems:
- poor hygiene
- food shortage - low nutrition
- population poverty - affects both of the above
- poor diet, highly processed diets, inflammatory diets - results in poor nutrition
- stressful lifestyle - burns up nutrients at an excelerated speed

So could our diets help us to turn this around?

Well it is definitely one part of it, and one that is not being talked about that much.  Im really not seeing much out there at the moment on nutrition even though I know lots of information is being put out there by therapists like myself.

Now is the time to recognise the power we have in our own health.  There is so much we can do while waiting for a vaccine or cure, that could realistically be a long way off.   Those that are being affected worse in this pandemic are those with compromised immunity already.  This show's that those with stronger immune responses are not being affected to severely, many with little to no symptoms.  We should be focussing on this!  this gives us a lot of useful information because there are lots of ways you can strengthen your immune response.

- diet we need to get back to basics - cook form fresh, use produce not products, lower alcohol and sugar consumption.  We truly are what we eat, we cannot supplement a bad diet and we are seeing this if we look closely
- probiotics - gut health directly impacts immune strength, probiotics are something I use with a large number of clients as a basic.
- herbs - herbal medicines are one of my favourite tools in my toolkit.  But do not use herbs as a way to suppress a symptoms or as a quick fix tool, they work best by bringing your body back to balance.
- lifestyle - slow down, its not a race!  We are burning ourselves out trying to keep up and not enjoying our lives in the process.  Re-evaluate what is important.  Many will likely work form home as a result of this pandemic, so it is important to put an emphasis on social interaction, outdoor activities and human connection
- Stress management - no more burying those feelings.  Stress that is pushed down, suppressed and ignored is one of the biggest contributing factors I see in ill health.  You will burn through your nutrients as an expanetial rate this way.

A simple analogy is to compare your body to a car and your diet is the fuel that keeps the car working well or clogs it up if it's cheap.  Stress is like making your car a racing car that just burns through that fuel and needs fixing more regularly till it no longer works or crashes.  

Feed your body what it needs and it will serve you well, especially in times like these.

So simple lesson to take forward is to stop waiting for someone else to cure us and help our bodies fight the battle they were built for.

"No-one is Immune" but don't live in fear!

“No-one is immune” was a term used as the lockdown eased.  This is true, we do not know if anyone is immune, even though those who have had the virus.
 
But let’s change the focus from fear, the many possibilities that everything could go wrong, the feeling of helplessness.  Let’s switch that on it’s head for a while.  What would happen if we focused on what we can do, what we have control or power over?
 
So, what can we do? 
 
Strengthen our natural immune system.  We have a natural immune defense.  This virus can affect any of us, but it seems to affect those with already compromised immunity worse.  So, we can reduce the risk by strengthening our own innate immunity.  Some of the following you can do with what you have at home and others you will need to see a practitioner like myself to guide you.
 
Diet –Increase natural produce, go organic (often higher in nutrients).  Eat a rainbow of colour.  Reduce inflammatory foods, processed foods, processed sugar

Probiotics – most of our immunity comes from the gut, by improving gut bacteria you can positively impact immunity

Spices and kitchen herbs – turmeric, cayenne, ginger, rosemary, thyme, mint, basil.  All have beneficial properties with respect to heart and lung issues.

Herbs – If you have not had the virus and are looking to strengthen immunity there are a number of herbs that can help our immune strength.   Herbs like echinacea (2 weeks only), elderflower, medicinal mushrooms like cordyceps, reishi, shitake and  Holy Basil.    There are a number of herbs that you cannot purchase, but have to be prescribed by a herbalist, like myself.  Here I would recommend a consultation.   
 
Cleanliness - now I'm not saying you're a bunch of mucky pups, but, keep the hand sanitizing up.  I wouldn't wear gloves, as an ex nurse, gloves were not worn contiunously, they were changed constantly to prevent infection transference.  Cleaning your hands is more effective and means you will be more vigilant, gloves give us a false sense of security.

Masks - I have been for wearing a mask from the beginning.  I have never understood why we were advised to self isolate but masks were not recommended.  I was a respiratory link nurse on a Medical Assessment unit and this lack of simple advice cause me no end of confusion.  We could have made our own masks and it would have had some effect. Companies that were involved in clothing, seamstresses, costume makers etc could have been contracted to make masks.   - I would like to say i wouldn't wear one all the time, this can cause problems, but I would wear one when going into enclosed spaces with a number of other people. Masks have a number of uses 
- stop some of the infection transfer
- this is a respiratory virus - by covering your nose and mouth you are preventing a certain amount of cross infection
- stops you touching your facial orifices, again transferring infection to your face if you have come into contact.

There are several stages of this virus and we need a different approach for each:
     Those who are not sick and want to strengthen their immunity
   Those who have the virus in a milder form and are convalescing at home
        Those who are in hospital (they will not be necessarily using holistic medicines at that point, but can use it in the next stage when they are recovering at home after
           Those who have had the virus and are now recovering and repairing the damage the virus has done to the body.  This is an area that natural medicines can help as a big part of what we do is nourish and repair the body after illness, not just during.

No One Pill For All Ills!

​As a therapist I will often be asked is there a supplement or herb you can give me to sort this out?  Unfortunately, the answer is mostly no.  

There is a very good reason for that though, so don't get discouraged.  You can do so much to have a positive impact on your health, wellness and weight, it’s more of an attitude than a pill though. 
 
You have the power to regain control over your health and wellbeing, like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz “You’ve always had the power my dear, you just had to learn it for yourself” but definitely not by yourself, that’s where I can help.

So why is a pill not the answer?
  1. An imbalance is normally present for some time before we notice it or before we decide to do something about it.
  2. Health issues often start with a lack of good nutrition or absorption of nutrients
  3. To regain the balance take a holistic approach, in other words, you need to look at the whole body: the cause, the symptoms, what’s missing and what’s in excess.  
  4. Imbalances are rarely caused by one aspect, so one pill won't fix everything
  5. A rounded approach has a better chance of success - nutrition, mindset, lifestyle, herbs.
  6. If you take a pill to cloak the symptom but do not change the circumstances that lead to it, the issue will soon rear it's ugly head again and this time the pill may not work.

Can you see why you may not have achieved the results you wanted in the past?  Or maybe why you originally got some results but eventually went backwards again.

The role of Convalescence in Covid-19

​Convalescence doesn’t just mean lying on the couch for an afternoon.  We used to have spa’s, convalescence homes and rural retreats, where people would go to recover after an illness, not as an expensive weekend away.
 
There is an art of convalescence and part of it is to truly allow yourself to relax into it, to truly allow the body time to heal. 
 
In my clinic I am often helping my clients in their recovery from long-term illness or to recouperate after illness or surgery.  The idea of convalescence is hard for many, even the name is now linked in our minds to a place for the elderly and infirm.  Convalescence used to be recognized as a vital part of recovery and regaining full health.
 
So how does that apply to the situation the world finds itself in now?  Well in truth it relates in a number of ways:
  • Recovering after contracting the virus – there are many effects this virus has on the body after the initial infection, we do not know all of the long-term effects yet.  Some we do know are lung scarring, anxiety, heart and kidney issues
  • Those who didn’t get the virus but have lost a lot due to the restrictions.  This can affect physical and mental health.
 
So, where does what I do come in? 
 
Nutrition, Naturopathy, Herbal medicines, reflexology, cupping and reiki can all help with the recovery process, to improve health and wellbeing.  There is an art to convalescing, it includes diet, herbs, rest, meditations, lowering stress, getting out in nature when you can.  It’s about changing our mindsets to recognizing what we need and not having to be on the go constantly.

​If there is one thing I would tell anyone to do it would be get your fruit and vegetable intake up.  I don’t mean 5 a day, I mean 10-12 a day.
 
You need to have
  • ¾ vegetables and ¼ fruit.
  • Organic where possible
  • Local where possible

Here’s a recipe I made up this week that’s packed with fruit and vegetables
 
Mango and chickpea curry
Ingredients
1Tbsp rapeseed oil
1 tsp fennel seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp coriander seeds
1 onion - chopped
2 cloves garlic - minced
1 inch ginger - minced
1 large red chilli - minced
1 Tbsp turmeric
2 long red peppers- chopped
1 sweet potato- chopped
1 mango - chopped
1 tin chickpeas - drained
1 tin chopped tomatoes
2 Tbsp sweet chilli sauce
1/2 cup raw cashews - toasted
1 lime - juiced
Fresh coriander to garnish
Method
1 - dry fry the seeds in a heavy based pan (30 secs to 1 minute
2 - Add oil and the onions, garlic, ginger, chilli. Fry for 1 min
3 - add  turmeric and fry for 1 minute
4 - add  peppers and fry for 2 minutes
5 - add  sweet potato and  1 cup boiled water. Cook for another 5 minutes
6- add  mango, chickpeas and tomatoes. Bring to the boil, then reduce and simmer for 1/2 hour/ till the sauce has thickened
7 - add  sweet chilli sauce, lime juice and cashews. Allow to simmer for  10 minutes.
8 - serve with rice/quinoa and enjoy
