Ways your gut health affects your overall health

​Everyone is talking about gut health and for good reason
Hipppocrates (father of medicine) states “all disease begins in the gut”
This is why gut health is the area I specialize in, it is very often the root cause of most health issues
The following are some example of how gut health affects your health:
  1. Metabolism –gut bacteria affects your metabolic rate
  2. Around 500 different kinds of bacteria in your digestive tract which make up what is known as the microbiota/microbiome
  3. Each persons microbiota is unique to them
  4. Links between  your microbiota and obesity, type II diabetes, heart disease
  5. IBD – Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis
  6. Colon cancer – studies have shown the microbiota of those with colon cancer is different to those who are healthy
  7. Anxiety and depression – gut-brain axis connection – studies have shown a link between gut disorders and central nervous system disorders.  This has also been connected to Autism
  8. Rhematoid arthritis – may have higher levels of inflammatory bacteria
  9. Poor digestion – poor nutritents absorption= poor overall health, poor energy and poor sleep
  10. Acid reflux, IBS, heartburn, indigestion are all caused by digestive disturbance
  11. 75-80% of your immunity is housed in the digestive tarct, therefore when the digestion is compromised so is your immunity
  12. lets not forget food intolerances – food intolerances are on the rise, more and more people are having problems with certain foods.  This stems from the digestion not breaking down the food properly, not able to absorb sufficiently and the immune system reacting to the food, often because it is being consumed in too high an amount.
 
So what can you do?

Diet
High fiber – fruits and vegetables
Whole grain
Nuts and seeds
Fermented foods
Prebiotic foods
 
Supplements
Probiotic – Biokult, Optibac, Udo’s super 8
Omega 3 oils – Krill oil, Udo’s oil

What do Puffy eyes mean and what can you do about it?

Puffy or darkness under the eyes, it's a common complaint, so much so that some of the most expensive beauty products are made to combat the issue.  So why do you get dark or puffy eyes?

Well as usual there are a number of route causes
  • DEHYDRATION - The puffiness under the eye can be a sign of Kidney issues, this can be simply not drinking enough water, having a high salt diet, drinking an excess of alcohol/coffee or caffeinated drinks to a health issue with the kidneys.
  • LACK OF SLEEP - lack of sleep causes stress on the body and adds extra strain on the detoxification organs such as the kidneys.
  • HYPOTHYROID - Puffy eyes are one of the symptoms of an underachieve thyroid, this does not mean id you have puffiness below the eyes that you have a thyroid problem, just that it is one of the possibilities.  To find out get a thyroid test done.
  • ARE YOU ALLERGIC - Certain allergies can cause puffiness below the eyes again due to the strain the allergy puts on the eliminatory organs such as the kidney.

Some simple solutions:
  • Drink enough water throughout the day. 1 glass every 2 hours is about right but increase it if you notice your urine is not very clear.
  • Reduce salt intake if it is high
  • Reduce foods known to cause allergies - wheat, dairy, sugar, processed
  • increase diuretic foods - cucumbers, celery, nettle, banana's, water, green tea.


If the symptoms persist make an appointment to check the route cause.
