Six ways to Luscious locks the Natural way

Hair loss, it’s a big issue when it starts happening to you.  It can knock your confidence, worry you that it won’t stop falling out and cause untold stress.

So what can you do?

Well as a Naturopath I look at the root cause of the problem.  So depending on why your locks are ending up on the floor rather than your head, I will advise on an appropriate course of action for you.

Some of the remedies and therapies I use:
·      Herbs- my favourite is Polygonum multiflorum, also known as Fo Shu Wu.  This works on the blood flow, so helps when the root cause is poor circulation to the peripheries.  Not only stops current hair falling out but stimulates new growth
·      Oils – mix sesame oil with a pinch of cayenne and massage the scalp
·      Hats or towels – wear a turban towel or wooly hat to bed, yes I’m not winding you up.  Keeping the scalp warm helps to promote blood flow to the scalp, feeding the hair follicles for healthy hair.
·      Foods – Thyroid issues can be implicated so using foods to help balance the thyroid will help hair growth/loss
·      Hormone balance – high testosterone can also be a cause.  Using herb and diet combinations can help to rebalance hormones.
·      Meditation – yes, meditation.  Stress can be a prominent cause of hair loss so anything that helps lower stress levels can help

The main thing is to realise that hair loss is not irreversible and doesn’t always need expensive solutions.   Find out what is causing your hair to fall out then rebalance that.

The seven Dwarves of Thyroid Disease

I’d like to introduce you to the seven dwarves of Thyroid Issues – Sleepy, Pudgy, Baldy, Foggy, Chilly, Jumpy and Cranky.   Recognise any of them?  You might need to get your thyroid checked!

I am seeing more and more cases of Thyroid issues in clinic, from hypothyroid, hyperthyroid, Hashimoto’s to Grave’s.  They all have something in common, the body is out of balance and not responding appropriately.

So when I work with Thyroid patients I don’t just work with the thyroid issue, I look at all the underlying issues making it worse.  Yes, I use herbal medicines to help the thyroid (depending on the current treatment the client is on), I help my clients to understand how diet plays a role in their condition, but then I look deeper.

So here are some of the things in your life that can be making your thyroid condition worse:
  • Heavy metal toxicity
  • Food allergies/intolerances – gluten is top of the class
  • Poor diet – high in processed foods, low on the nutrients
  • Stress

My chelation therapy regime helps to remove the heavy metals.

By performing food intolerance tests I can help the client to remove the foods causing issues, I will also work on the gut as leaky gut can be the root cause for the intolerance.

Diet, well that’s my Jam (pardon the pun).  Diet plays a huge role in Thyroid issues, so rather than playing around trying out diets online, testing which one works for you, get a professional tailored diet.

Stress can’t always be eradicated but that’s why I use Reflexology, Reiki, Hopi Ear candling and Cupping as tools to help relieve stress from your body.

Contact the clinic to start a thyroid health program.

Back to our Roots

I have loved herbal medicine, I think since I was that little girl, making perfume from my mothers lovely rose bushes.  I am in awe of how mother nature provides many medicines we need around us.

Here in Mayo there are some wonderful herbs growing all around us.

Wild garlic –This gorgeous delicate herb makes a delicious pesto and dressing for salads this time of year, medicinally it’s antiviral/bacterial/septic.  Some studies have shown its effectiveness at reducing blood pressure.

Hawthorn – these wild bushes are everywhere, in the spring we get the flower and in the winter it produces the berry.   In herbal medicine we use the flowers, leaves and berries as medicines.  This amazing plant is used primarily for heart issues such as an irregular heartbeat, also used for digestive/kidney issues and to calm anxiety

Elder – I just love the Elder tree.  Again in the summer we get the flowers and in the winter it provides the berries.  The flowers are used  as a lung tonic, elderflower is a great tonic to remove congestion from the lungs, shift hard to move mucus.  The berries are a perfect winter tonic, with antiviral/bacterial/fungal/septic properties, it is perfect for the winter chesty colds.

Cleavers – we all know the cleaver as the plant we used to stick to our clothes.  This is a fabulous urinary tonic herb, diuretic, lymphatic, blood cleanser and great for skin health.

Nettle  - we are usually trying to get rid of them, but our grandparents used to make soup from them as a gentle detox after the winter, plus they are high in iron.  Now as a herbalist I would use nettles for urinary issues, pain in the muscles and joints, eczema, prostate, arthritis, gout and anaemia.

Dandelion – most gardeners will be pulling dandelions like crazy at the moment.  This poor herb has a bad rap.  Dandelion is a great detoxifier, it improves appetite, gallstones, liver health, joint and muscle pain, detoxification by increasing urine production and moving the bowels.

The main thing to remember is never pick an herb if you aren’t familiar with them and always get professional advice from herbalists, like myself before trying herbs, especially if you have a pre-existing condition and are on medication.

What does a Naturopath do???

What do I do?  This is the most common question I get asked.  So Here’s the short version.

I am a Naturopath, Nutritional therapist, Herbalist, Iridologist, Reflexologist, Reiki master and Previously a Nurse.  Still not sure what I do?  Don’t worry you wouldn’t be on your own.

Basically I am a Natural health expert, finding Natural health solutions for most health conditions.  My aim is to find the root cause of your ills and work with your diet, herbal medicines and lifestyle to help strengthen your body to fight back.

My main areas of expertise are Gut health, this is an area that is becoming more widely accepted as the root cause of most chronic health issues.  I also work with many arthritis clients, hormone health issues, chronic pain conditions, lupus, fibromyalgia, childhood conditions,

Your body has the most amazing ability to heal, if you give it the right circumstances.  Modern life weakens our body, from stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, the idea that we can push our bodies to limits they were never expected to before and then take something to fix it.

The truth is we need to slow down, eat better and show ourselves a bit more self care and a little less abuse.  It’s not a case of having to be perfect but just having a balanced idea of what our bodies need to be healthy and providing it.

What many people don’t realize is that you can see a Naturopath like myself alongside your GP and Consultants.  It’s not an either or situation.  Natural medicines can be used as a stand alone treatment or alongside in a supporting role.
