On this cancer journey I am so grateful to have the medical and natural health knowledge I’ve have built up over the years. It is helping me feel I have more choices and it’s definitely reducing the amount of medications I have to take. So far I seem to be doing ok with the treatments, I have a couple of bad days where I sleep and feel sick and then I’m up and at it again. Some of the investigations have been harder. So far I have had 2 CT’s, an MRI, a bone scan, spine’ lymph and Breast biopsies, ultrasounds, mammograms and lots of blood tests. With many of these investigations you need to have extremely strong solutions injected for contrast or as with the biopsies they can irritate the area and have their own symptoms. In this last week I had a brain CT and spinal biopsy of tumors on my spine. Both can have side effects. It left me feeling extremely nauseous and suffering with ocular migraines. This is where my bank of knowledge helps. For the nausea I was able to use ginger in my juices, fresh peppermint tea, probiotics and my digestive capsules (slippery elm and marshmallow) to rebalance any upset to my digestion. For the headaches, rest is the best cure so I’ve been resting but I’ve also been able to use pineapple in my juices and turmeric to help reduce any inflammation adding to them. I am a great believer in we go through things in life as a lesson and I am definitely learning about myself, delving into more specific areas of natural medicine and what needed to change in my life. This is general advice, if you have a medical condition please check with a professional before commencing any new treatments or lifestyle plans. As a nurse and a naturopath I see the benefits in both conventional and natural medicine, each has its time and place and they can work well together. I have noticed a general rule of thumb can be that modern medicines excel in acute Emergencies and natural medicine excels in chronic conditions.
When I got my cancer diagnosis I made it clear to my medical team. I would take and do everything that was vital to getting rid of this cancer but I would not be taking all the extra medications prescribed for side effects if I had an effective natural treatment. So far there are 5 extra medications I would be taking, that I have successfully replaced with a herbal or natural treatment. This for me means that my body has less toxicity to deal with, less to process and so that energy can go towards healing. I am using a herbal remedy for constipation- cascara and Licorice In event of constipation or Diarrhea- I use high doses of probiotics to balance to gut flora For oral Candida /thrush – I use Udo’s super 5 oral probiotic lozenges Part of the reason for my choice is: · It helps me feel I have an element of control in a situation that is out of my control · I have the knowledge to be able to and feel if I can help Strengthen my body, mind and immunity in any way I will · I will take vital medications but I don’t react well historically to medications (partly why I became a naturopath, nutritional therapist and herbalist) These are my choices of how I face my own disease, from a place of knowledge on both sides of the medical fence. I hope it can help others see how all forms of medicine can work together for the benefit of the patient.
