Are you busy? whether it's work, children, parents, running from one thing to another?  Who isn't these days?  It's all part of life, right?

So how do you make time to eat healthy?

Have you ever thought that you will always make time for what you think is important?  The things you value most always get done.  The problem is for many people the things for themselves are usually put to the back of a very long list.

So today I want you to think about a few things when it comes to diet:
  • if you make time to eat healthy food, you will perform better at all your tasks through the day
  • a good diet helps good brain function. energy, weight control
  • many of us self sabotage by eating very little all day, then binging in the evening - this is counter productive.
  • another sabotage is eating carbohydrate rich diets that have very little protein
  • it takes less time to cook a a healthy meal than it does to order and collect a takeaway
  • healthy food is not more expensive, that's a myth.
  • eating healthy stops you craving all the junk foods

When did summer get here??

​How did that happen?  All of a sudden summer seems to have crept up on us this year.  At least it looks like we are in for a nice month of July.
 
I have had a number of new clients booking in to do my 3 month Weight and Wellness Program, trying to get back in shape after lockdown.  The main areas highlighted by my clients looking for a weight management program are:

Time to re-open

​It’s been a very strange 4 months, in many more ways than one.
 
I am so excited to announce I can finally physically re-open the doors to my clinic and can’t wait to start seeing clients in person again.  I will be continuing to see clients online also, for those that aren’t able to come to the clinic.
 
But what has the last 4 months hopefully taught us?
 
  • We can help our own health – strengthen immunity with food and herbs.  We may still have a second wave coming, it’s hard to say, but it’s worth being prepared by looking after your immunity so to lessen the risk of serious complications if it returns
  • We don’t need to be crazy, manic busy!  I think most of us can agree the slow-down in pace has been good, so please, please, please don’t rush back to the mayhem
  • We can cook!  So many people found that with the extra time they started to cook more and enjoyed it.  Now I know it’s easy to fill all our time when we are back in the rat race but think about continuing to cook from fresh, whether that’s an omelette or a fancy dinner
  • It’s not too hard to grow your own- I’ve seen so many more posts online about growing your own veggies.  If you didn’t get the chance give it a go, start with maybe some carrots/onion/spring onions/ cabbage/herbs/tomatoes
  • We really love a good walk – keep it up, make the time to go out for a walk, take a deep breath and enjoy your surroundings.  Use it as a time to clear your head

The busy mums club

We all know her, some are her:
Before lockdown always on the go.  Running up and down the road every night of the week, never stopping for very long.
Now, trying to balance homework, work, family time, cooking and some time for themselves.
There are some great ways to simplify some things, so it gives you a bit more time to look after you!
I can help you with the cooking/nutrition side, stress management side, tips for a bit of you time.  I run a free group on Facebook called The Natural Health Tribe.  We will be running a free 2 week online program to kickstart your weight and wellness journey.  You can sign up in the group.
So here is a simple tip that helps make nutritious food for the family without being tied to the kitchen.
 
Batch cook
Make up some mince - chicken/turkey/beef/lamb
Add lots of veggies - if your children are “veggie fussy” just cook them and add to passata to make the mince sauce and blend.
Now you have your base
Your protein and veggies are done.
You can batch freeze this in portions
So what can you use this for?
1-  spaghetti bolognaise - add pasta
2 - shepherds pie - top with sweet potato/carrot/parsnip mash
3 - taco night- add some spices, make some guacamole and salsa and have a fiesta
4-  jacket potato - top a jacket potato with the mince, a little cheese and side salad
5-  curry night - fry curry spices, some ginger and chilli’s, add the mince and some tins of tomatoes and cook for 30 minutes.
Healthy eating can be fun for all the family and it doesn’t have to be difficult

Is Chocolate a health food?

Ok, before you get too excited it’s not the mass produced milk chocolate you might be thinking of.  More the 85% dark chocolate or Cacao.
 
Cacao – raw unprocessed plant or bean
Chocolate – anything made form the bean
Cocoa – powdered chocolate
 
Here’s a little history:
       Name comes from Aztec word xocoatl Cacao tree – Latin name Thoebroma cacao meaning food of the gods
         Mayans and Aztecs used cacao in ceremonies and as medicine – they believed it had magical, divine properties
         Chocolate a bitter drink until 1528 – Aztec king Montezuma gave Spanish explorer Hernando Cortez the chocolate drink at a banquet.  He didn’t like the taste but realized by adding honey/sugar cane it was pleasant. Cortez bought chocolate back to Spain
         Europeans in the 16th century saw chocolate as Nutritious, medicinal and aphrodisiac
            Cassanova was rumored to be a big fan of chocolate
       First chocolate bar – 1847 – created by Joseph Fry
              First boxed chocolate candies – 1868 – Cadbury’s – England  


Health properties – Cacao/85% dark chocolate
      Feel happy – contains the chemical phenylethylamine (PEA) – chemical involved in the feeling of love
          Heart and circulation – blood flow
           Cholesterol – yes dark chocolate can improve cholesterol
     Reduces stroke risk
        High in minerals – potassium, iron, zinc and selenium
       Skin – high in flavanols that protect skin form sun damage
           Weight loss – who knew? Melt dark chocolate on the tongue for 20 minutes – tells brain you are full
          New mums and babies – Finnish study showed it reduced stress in expectant mothers Improves insulin sensitivity
              High in flavanols so makes a great brain food  


​If we use foods the way they were originally intended they can be very beneficial, the more we change them the more unhealthy they become, in general.
