THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT ORGANIC 1 - Everything was organic until after World War II when pesticides were introduced. 2 - Not all organic is local. Organic can still be shipped from as far away as China, so check labels, try to support local organic farmers where you can 3 - Organic is not just for those who are rich - local organic veg box schemes like - Green Earth Organics in Galway - are very reasonable in price, much cheaper than the big supermarkets. Also try local green grocers for deals 4 - Organic is most important for pregnant women, young children and those with reduced health - pesticides, even in small doses can be harmful 5 - Organic farming can feed the world. We would need to change from eating lots of red meat to more chicken and fish, but that's the trend that is happening now. It was thought that we could not grow enough feed for the bovine industry organically. 6 - The majority of organic brands in the super market are owned by big corporations. The majority of organic foods you should be buying is whole foods. 7 - Organic is not about taste, extra nutrients or being trendy. Eating organic is about eating foods that do not have chemicals or hormones added that could be harmful to our bodies. 8 - Organic junk food is still junk food. It is still processed and unhealthy. The label organic does not immediately mean healthy, you still need to choose healthy organic foods 9 - You can't wash off pesticides - you should still wash the food but it will still have pesticides in it. Organic is the only way to remove the problem. 10 - Organic seeds are in danger of extinction - there are 4 main agri producing companies. they do not believe in preserving organic non GM seeds. The seeds are needed to grow organic fruit and vegetables and herbs, without them there is no organic produce. 11 - Our modern way of farming is not sustainable - it is ruining the land and making our food nutrient poor, due to over use of chemicals in the soils and not crop rotating to allow the soil to replenish it s nutrients. 12 - Natural does not mean organic - many companies label products natural - this is easier to get the certification and is not an organic product, chemicals are still used in the processes. 13 -non-organic foods often loose nutrient in the growing or processing stage so nutrients are artificially added in after chemically.
